TULANE NEW ORLEANS MUSIC "True"

PKCD-251

Hearing this recording again after an interval of nearly ten years reminded me what a truly great New Orleans-style band this was, and, despite some shortcomings in the recording, (it was ten years ago after all!) I am very pleased to have Pete Child's approval to re-issue this album. The line-up is Nigel Hunt trumpet; Hugh Roberts clarinet, tenor sax; Pete Child trombone; Geof Roberts piano; Bill Scott banjo; Roger White double bass; Roger Wells drums. Sadly the band folded only a year or two after this recording, though several band members will be familiar to many of you. The tunes are:- Shake It And Break It, When Your Hair Has Turned To Silver, Love Songs Of The Nile, Don't Sweetheart Me, Cradle Song, True, Don't Go Away Nobody, June Night, I Love You So Much It Hurts, Jambalaya On The Bayou, On Higher Ground, Bluebells Goodbye, Someday Sweetheart, I'll See You In My Dreams. (69 mins) This CD is a reissue of PKC-029 from 1994.

THE JOHN MADDOCKS JAZZMEN "Lucky For Some"

PKCD-257

A new CD from the John Maddocks band is always a welcome treat and this one, recorded in June 2004 is especially exciting. John's band has gone through some personnel changes in recent times, with the retirement of Alan Potton and Brian Stockley from the band, and the partial retirement of Tony Farr. John seems to have struck gold in his replacement for Alan Potton. Peter Wilkinson is a fine musician with a lovely tone who has slotted effortlessly into the trumpet chair. Sid Bailey and Tony Farr now share the trombone duties, while Brian Barker's drumming ensures the rhythm section maintains its traditionally high standard. The other band members are as on their previous CDs. Recorded (not live) in June 2004 this new CD has 13 tracks, four of which are original tunes written by band members and recorded here for the very first time:- Dans Les Rues d'Antibes, Hymn To Her, Cry Baby Cry, Guess You Were Right All Along, Crescent Strut, Fair And Square In Love, Good Morning Blues, Black And Blue, The Second Line, Novelty Bounce, Big Lip Blues, Hiawatha Rag. JENSEN'S NEW ORLEANS JAZZ SERENADERS featuring Brian Carrick & Eddie Bruhner "Live at the 2004 Keswick Festival"

PKCD-259

This is a family band - Kurt Jensen on clarinet and tenor sax, his wife Nan Ehrenstrale on double bass and daughter Nina on banjo and vocals, with drummer Ronald Anderson. At Keswick 2004 they were joined by Brian Carrick (clarinet and tenor sax) and Eddie Bruhner (trumpet). Having two reed players, both of whom doubled on clarinet and tenor sax, gave rise to some interesting sound variations - two clarinets on some tracks, two tenors on other tracks, etc. The band's style is what one might call 'earthy New Orleans' and the tunes are:- Get Out Of Here And Go On Home, On A Coconut Island, Hindustan, How Great Thou Art, Jambalaya On The Bayou, I Can't Escape From You, Corrine Corrina, Nyboders Pris, Cat's Got Kittens, Crazy, South, The Old Spinning Wheel In The Parlour, Down By The Riverside, Joe Avery's Piece. THE TIERRA BUENA JAZZ BAND "Linger Awhile with The Tierra Buena Jazz Band"

PKCD-260

This super band, based near Coventry, has been going for nearly 50 years, still with three founder members. Their music covers a wide spectrum of traditional jazz styles, as the list of tune titles shows, and everything they play is done with great enthusiasm and good taste. An all-round excellent band, which really should be much more widely known. They had a cassette recorded about ten or so years ago but amazingly this is their first CD! The tune titles are:- Bouncing Around, Some Of These Days, Faraway Blues, I Saw Stars, Frog-I-More Rag, Big Fat Ma And Skinny Pa, Paramount Scuffle, Linger Awhile, I'm Minding My Own Business, When I Come To The End Of My Journey, Oriental Man, For All We Know, Just Wait 'til You See My Baby Do The Charleston, Saratoga Swing, I Lost My Girl From Memphis, Swing That Music. The line-up is Brian Bates cornet; Dave 'Spud' Taylor clarinet & tenor sax; Brian 'Watty' Wathen trombone; Dave Wagstaff banjo; Barry Potts bass; Al Sharpe drums. (72mins)

THE JOHN HALLAM JAZZTET "Keep Swinging"

PKCD-261

John Hallam has appeared on P.E.K. Sound with various bands (Jeff Barnhart's British Band, Roger Heeley Trio, Crazy Rhythm and most recently The Harmony Hounds), but this is our first recording by his own quartet (live at the 2004 Keswick Festival). If their music had to be put in a pigeon-hole, I suppose it could be called lyrical swinging mainstream jazz. John's sensitive and fluent clarinet and sax playing is brilliantly supported by Steve Moore (keyboard), Dave Capp (double bass) and Ken Leigh (drums). The tunes are:- Swing That Music, Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans, Love Walked In, I Cover The Waterfront, Lullaby 0f The Leaves, Poor Butterfly, A Weaver Of Dreams, I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good, Line For Lyons, Pee Wee Blues, Just A-Sittin' And A-Rockin', I Surrender Dear, Puttin' On The Ritz. DENNIS ARMSTRONG'S GREAT NORTHERN JAZZ BAND "Now, here's a tune"

PKCD-266

Here is the first CD for P.E.K. by this excellent band led by Dennis Armstrong cnt, with Peter Curtis cl, Terry McGrath tb, Malcolm Hogarth pno, Mike Sayles bjo, Isabel Toner bs and Dave Jenkins dms. In every respect this is a quality band, playing a wide range of traditional jazz, and paying great attention to playing the tunes as closely as possible to how they were written, some of them with the rarely-heard verse as well - something for which I applaud them. The tunes are:- Candy Lips, The Old Folks At Home, Atlanta Blues, Chattanooga Stomp, I Can't Say, I'm Going Away To Wear You Off My Mind, Gypsy Love Song, Chimes Blues, Jazz Club Bounce, Bright Eyes Goodbye, Memphis Blues, Ting-A-Ling, Froggie Moore Rag, Yellow Dog Blues, Yearning, Darkness On The Delta, Panama.
