RICHARD LEACH'S 7 STARS OF JAZZ "Strike Two"

PKCD-267

As the title suggests this is the band's second CD, recorded live in December 2004, just a year after their first CD. The line-up is unchanged from PKCD-243. The difference between the two recordings lies mainly in the fact that a busy year of playing together has created a terrific sense of unity within the band and great rapport in their playing. This really is a top class band in the style of The Alex Welsh Band of the 1950s to 1970s. Almost every single track played that night could have been released and Richard's big problem was selecting the tracks for rejection! The tunes are:- There'll Be Some Changes Made, It Had To Be You, Everybody Loves My Baby, When I Take My Sugar To Tea, Shiny Stockings, Lover Come Back To Me, Trust In Me, Muskrat Ramble, Marie, Way Down Yonder In New Orleans, That Old Feeling, Rose Room, I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me, Doggin' Around. THE HUGH RAINEY JAZZ BAND WITH CHARLES CONNOR "Always A Pleasure!"

PKCD-268

This is the band's fifth CD for P.E.K. and I think their best. It was recorded (not live) in January 2005; in a single day no fewer than 26 tracks were recorded. Twenty of them appear on this CD which features the wide range of jazz material we come to expect from Hugh's fine band. The tunes are:- Copenhagen, Black And White Rag, Sweet And Slow, Dapper Dan, Balcony Rock, Move The Body Over, Sunday Blues, Big Boss Man, Cute, Nostalgia Rag, Cushion Foot Stomp, Blues To Be There, China Boy, What Can I Say Dear, Black Bottom Stomp, Ain't Misbehavin', Dear Old Southland, Just One Of Those Things, Spain, Ting-A-Ling. The line-up is Hugh Rainey tpt, Jack Clifford reeds, Les Handscombe tb, David Browning pno, Terry Godwin bjo, gtr, Derek Pring, tuba, bs, John Baker dms. They are joined by Charles Connor, cl, sop sax on eight tracks and by John Finch washboard on one track. (Hugh has very graciously dedicated this CD to my late wife Eleanor who died just five weeks before the recording session). (78 min)

THE DAVE DONOHOE BAND WITH CUFF BILLETT "At the 2004 Bude Jazz Festival"

PKCD-270

I have waited nearly three years to record Dave's fine band with Cuff Billet. A recording was planned at Keswick in 2002 but illness meant I missed the festival that year. So I was especially delighted when the chance came at Bude 2004 to record them together. This is one of the most exciting albums I have recorded in a very long time. Cuff Billet is without doubt one of the (if not the) finest New Orleans-style trumpeters playing today - anywhere, and his inspirational playing lifted the entire band. The other band members are:- Frank Brooker cl, ten sax, Dave Donohoe tb, Des Bacon pno, Malcolm Horne bjo, gtr, Annie Hawkins bs, Dion Cochrane dms. The tunes are:- S'il Vous Plait, Climax Rag, Maria Elena, Kid Thomas Boogie, Love Songs Of Long Ago, Come Back Sweet Papa, Original Tuxedo Rag, The Last Mile Of The Way, Tuxedo Junction, Hindustan, Aura Lee, Panama, Goodnight Sweet Prince. Over the years Eleanor had attended many jazz sessions with me but this was her last one. At Dave Donohoe's request, the CD is dedicated to her memory. (78 min)

THE WABASH JAZZMEN "Hellishly Hot"

PKCD-271

This is the band's first CD with Gordon Whitworth on trumpet. The rest of the band is unchanged- Mike Hayler clarinet and tenor sax; Mike Pembroke trombone; Mark Challinor banjo and Howard Worthington double bass. It was recorded live on March 11th 2005 at Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club and the CD title is very appropriate - it really is a hot album! The list of tunes includes one or two little-known tunes - Jamaica March, Li'l Liza Jane, If Ever I Cease To Love, Rent Party Blues, Bugle Boy March, Come Back Sweet Papa, I Got Rhythm, Under The Bamboo Tree, Yearning (Just For You), Yellow Dog Blues, Hindustan, Isle Of Capri, The Battle Hymn Of The Republic, East Coast Trot, Over In The Gloryland, Wolverine Blues. This is a really great album by a superb band, and you get almost 78 minutes playing time!

JOHN DUNMORE'S NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND "Sentimental Journey"

PKCD-272

This new CD by John Dunmore's New Orleans Jazz Band was recorded live at one of their regular Sunday afternoon session at the Wharf Inn, Bugbrooke, Northants on February 13th 2005. At this picturesque country pub the regulars come and enjoy their Sunday lunch and then sit back while John's band entertains them. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday I reckon. The line-up is Ken Pye trumpet; John Dunmore alto sax, tenor sax, clarinet; Stan Stephens trombone; Barry Grummett piano; Rachel Hayward banjo, guitar; Harry Slater double bass; Paul 'Spud' Spedding drums. The thirteen tracks are - June Night, When I Grow Too Old To Dream, Nobody's Sweetheart, Without You For An Inspiration Dear, Ting-A-Ling, Coquette, I Like Bananas, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter, S'il Vous Plait, Ti-Pi-Tin, A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening, I Want You, Sentimental Journey. The playing time is nearly 71 minutes.

BRIAN CARRICK'S ALGIERS STOMPERS "True (I'm Just Crazy Over You)"

PKCD-273

This new CD by The Algiers Stompers was recorded at the 2004 Bude Jazz Festival, with the band on great form playing to a large and appreciative audience. Since their last recording (PKCD-219, March 2003) there have been some personnel changes and the line-up is Peter Wright cornet, Brian Carrick clarinet and tenor sax, Chas Hudson trombone, Gabriele Gad piano, Malcolm Hurrell banjo, Bill Cole double bass, Guy Fenton drums. The band has a great talent for unearthing long lost tunes which are well suited to a New Orleans-style treatment. On this CD the tunes are:- You're Nobody's Darlin' But Mine, St Louis Blues, Have You Ever Been Lonely, Eh La Bas, True, Just A Girl That Men Forget, Tap Room Special, Sweet Emma Barrett, Magic Isle, River Of The Roses, Bluer Than Blue, Are You Ready. The playing time is just under 70 minutes.
