DEREK WINTERS & BRIAN CARRICK "Painting The Clouds"

PKCD-287

It's no secret that, musically, New Orleans-style jazz is my first love, and I think this is one of the best N.O.-style CDs I've heard in ages. It was recorded at Bude 2005 just three days after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, and just as the full impact of the destruction was becoming clearer to us. Yellow Dog is a new band led by Derek Winters on trumpet and with Brian Carrick (clarinet and tenor sax), Dave Soby (piano), Stu Morrison (banjo), John Boyett (double bass) and Cees Hoogkamer (drums). You'll notice there is no trombone in the line-up; I think this gives more freedom to Derek and Brian - they play so well together! The tunes on this marvellous CD are:- Put On Your Old Gray Bonnet, The Beer Barrel Polka, Born To Lose, Uptown Bumps, One Sweet Letter From You, Chinatown My Chinatown, Over The Waves, In The Evening, Painting The Clouds With Sunshine, Valentine, Mama Inez, Tell The Lord I'm Coming Home Someday. A bonus is the excellent sleeve-notes written by Chris Barber. (67 mins)

THE ANTIQUE SIX JAZZ BAND "Renovated"

PKCD-288

I last recorded the Antique Six Jazz Band in 2001. Since then the personnel has changed almost completely, most recently of course following the death of Dick Chapman and the retirement from the band of his wife Jackie. In recent years this has become one of the best traditional jazz bands in England and it is encouraging that they are continuing the fine work done by Dick and Jackie. The new line-up is Chris Mercer trumpet, Chris Pearce clarinet and saxes, Richard Leach trombone, Clinton Sedgley banjo, Andy Robins double bass, Graham Smith drums. The tunes on their latest CD, recorded in January 2006 are:- Come Back Sweet Papa, All The Girls Go Crazy, Someday Sweetheart, Harlem Folk Dance, Working Man Blues, Black Bottom Stomp, Smokey Mokes, Tin Roof Blues, I'm Crazy 'bout My Baby, Perdido St Blues, Algiers Strut, Over The Rainbow, Since My Best Girl Turned Me Down, Saint James Infirmary, Bouncing Around. Great band - great CD. (76 mins)

THE OKeh ALL STARS "Rhythm Kings"

PKCD-289

Like so many great bands the OKeh All Stars came about by chance as a result of its members being together in a pick-up band. It all gelled so well they decided to become a regular working band. They are all devoted to the classic jazz of the 1920s much of which, including the music of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver etc was recorded by the OKeh Record Company in Chicago, New York, Memphis and elsewhere. The line-up on this CD (recorded in January 2006) is Ken Sims cornet; George Dawson clarinet, soprano & alto saxes; John Goddard trombone; Bob Gough piano; Geoff Over banjo; Don Smith double bass & tuba; Norman Davey drums. The tunes are:- Papa Dip, Perdido St Blues, Buddy's Habit, Someday Sweetheart, Oriental Strut, You're Next, Snake Rag, Sweet Lovin' Man, Gatemouth, Dans Les Rues d'Antibes, Rhythm King, Working man Blues, Doctor Jazz, Willie The Weeper, Wolverine Blues, Panama. SHEILA FAWKES AND THE GUYS "If I Could Be With You"

PKCD-290

For this CD, the first in her own name, Sheila Fawkes gathered together a small band of top class musicians to accompany her renditions of some of the marvellous and often neglected vintage songs from the 1920s - the golden age of song-writing. The band members are:- George Huxley clarinet, soprano & alto saxes; Terry McGrath trombone & alto sax; Jon Penn piano; Geoff Over banjo; Mark Johnson double bass & tuba. The tunes are:- Baltimore, If I Could Be With You, Wanted, A Tu Le Cafard, I Want Somebody To Love, Somebody Stole My Gal, Ten Cents A Dance, Big Boy, Passport To Paradise, Don't Tell Him What Happened To Me, I'm A Litle Blackbird, Buddy Bolden Stomp, Morocco Blues, Pickin' On Your Baby, It Had To Be You, Body And Soul, Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out, Cakewalking Babies From Home. Sheila sings on 14 of the 18 tracks. (72 mins)

DENNIS ARMSTRONG'S OLIVER BAND "Joe Oliver's Music"

PKCD-291

Here is another superb band which happened by chance. At the 2003 Bude Jazz Festival the informal duo session of Dennis Armstrong and Jon Penn, one evening at The Bencoolen Inn, gradually grew in number, until by 11.30pm it had become an eight-piece band playing 'Joe Oliver's Music'. Now, three years on, I am delighted to have recorded their first CD. As the excellent sleevenotes say - 'The band plays arrangements based on, but not constrained by, the original Oliver recordings'. I must pay tribute to Dennis and his superb second cornet player Chris Mercer for the many hours they have rehearsed in order to capture the special two-cornet sound of the Oliver band. The other fine band-members are:- Phil Wall clarinet, Bob Dwyer trombone, Jon Penn piano, Geoff Over banjo, John Bayne double bass and bass sax, Rodger Hanley drums. The tunes are:- Froggie Moore Rag, Working Man Blues, Chattanooga Stomp, Where Did You Stay Last Night, Some Of These Days, Jazzin' Babies Blues, Mandy Lee Blues, Mabel's Dream, Sweet Lovin' Man, Weatherbird Rag, Sobbin' Blues, I'm Going Away To Wear You Off My Mind, Riverside Blues, Room Rent Blues, New Orleans Stomp. THE JOHN MADDOCKS JAZZMEN "Here We Are Again"

PKCD-292

In common with several of the band's earlier CDs this one was recorded live at the Bude Jazz Festival. It's become almost a tradition that the Bude Festival starts with John's exciting band at the Falcon Hotel - a great festival opener - and 2005 was no exception. The band line-up is unchanged since their last recording (PKCD-276 'Old & New') - Peter Wilkinson trumpet, John Maddocks clarinet & alto sax, Tony Farr trombone, Peter Tamplin piano, Keith Dorey banjo & guitar, Stuart Gledhill double bass, Brian Stockley drums. The tunes on this excellent CD are:- New Orleans Wiggle, Baritaria, Black Cat On The Fence, Ballin' The Jack, Drop That Sack, Where Did You Stay Last Night, Linger Awhile, Lawd You Made The Night Too Long, Snake Rag, Papa De Da Da, Bogalousa Strut, No Regrets, Messin' Around, It's Nobody's Fault But Mine.
