BOB CALDWELL QUARTET "I Believe In Miracles"

PKCD-390

I think this is Bob's first recording under his own name. He is of course well-known from his many years as reed player in Paul Munnery's Harlem Jazz Orchestra. Here he plays his selection of jazz standards and ballads from the golden age of jazz.:-
I Believe In Miracles, All Too Soon, I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling, Autumn Leaves, Body And Soul, Louisiana Fairytale, Gone With The Wind, Out Of Nowhere, I Would Do 'most Anything For You, In A Sentimental Mood, Memories Of You, Lush Life, Tea For Two, Misty, My One And Only Love, Never Let Me Go, Together, Sophisticated Lady. He is accompanied by Roger Heeley piano; Tony Sharp double bass and Roy Dutton drums. (67min)

THE PHIL BROWN SWINGTET "All The Cats Join In"

PKCD-391

This band has a very broad approach to their jazz with tunes from the dixieland era, the age of swing and right up to 1960s Funk/Rock. Over the years the band has become one of the most accomplished in its field and this, the band's latest recording, shows off their mastery of their chosen music. The line-up is Lester Brown trumpet, flugelhorn; Mark Aston reeds; Phil Brown trombone; Andrew Clancy piano; Mike Bennett double bass; David Clancy drums. The tunes are:- Tenor Madness, A String of Pearls; New Orleans, Alfie, St Louis Blues, The Preacher, Hymn To Freedom, Nostalgia In Times Square, Rhythm-a-Ning, Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover, That's A Plenty, Mercy Mercy Mercy, Sunny, All The Cats Join In. SAVANNAH JAZZ BAND "Sacred & Secular"

PKCD-392

The Savannah Jazz Band has been a leading light on the UK traditional jazz scene for many years and it's a great thrill for me to offer their latest CD on my label. This superb session was recorded live at the 2014 Bude Jazz Festival in front of a packed and enthusiastic audience at the Falcon Hotel. As Ron Cassidy says in his excellent sleeve-notes, "Theirs is not a performance to the audience, but with the audience, as all authentic jazz performances should be". The line-up is Bill Smith cornet and harmonica; Roger Myerscough reeds; Brian Ellis trombone and piano; Chris Marney banjo; Tony Pollitt double bass and John Meehan drums. The variation of instrumentation (harmonica on two tracks and piano on two tracks) adds an extra dimension to this CD. The tunes are:- In The Shade Of The Old Apple Tree; The Girls Go Crazy 'bout The Way I Walk; Storyville Blues; Oh Lady Be Good; The Old Rugged Cross; Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen; Georgia Bo Bo; My Gal Sal; Nyboders Pris; Key To The Highway; Just A Closer Walk With Thee; Lord Lord Lord; Canal Street Blues; Goin' Home. (73 min).

LAURIE CHESCOE'S REUNION BAND "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams"

PKCD-393

Here is the second CD by Laurie's superb band - the line-up reads like a "who's who" of top jazz musicians:- Allan Bradley trumpet; Karl Hird (from Australia) clarinet & tenor sax; Mike Owen trombone; Colin Bray piano; Jim Douglas guitar & banjo; Pete Skivington bass; Laurie Chescoe drums. This is another band who have a wonderful rapport with their audience, and who clearly know how to entertain them. This album was recorded live at The Falcon Hotel, Bude during the 2014 Jazz Festival and at Laurie's suggestion (and for the first time ever on P.E.K. Sound) I have included snippets of the introductions to some of the tunes. Allan Bradley is an amazing 'front man' with a wicked sense of humour and it would have been a pity not to share some of his chat with a wider audience. Certainly the enthusiastic fans at the Falcon loved every minute of it. The tunes are:- Riverboat Shuffle; Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams; I'm Nobody's Baby; You Always Hurt The One You Love; Sleepy Time Gal; Dinah; Basin Street Blues; South; Ida, Sweet As Apple Cider; Exactly Like You; Stardust; Silver Dollar; Ice Cream (69min) I must mention, for those of you who are interested in such things, Pete Skivington plays a bass ukulele. I'd never seen one before but I think you'll agree it's a very effective alternative to a double bass and it's a fraction of the size!

JOHN SHILLITO BAND "That Old Gang Of Mine"

PKCD-394

This fine band has been in existence since about 1995 with an unchanged front line. The Falcon Hotel at Bude, where this CD was recorded, is a wonderful venue and seems to bring out the best in both the bands who play there and the audiences who hear them. In any event this session at the 2014 Bude Festival was an absolute cracker! The line-up is John Shillito trumpet & vocals; Bobby Fox trombone; John Wurr reeds; Simon Banks piano; Pete Furnish double bass, Derek Maughan drums. The tunes are:- Take A Ferryboat Down To New Orleans, In The Good Old Summertime, Buddy Bolden's Blues, That Old Gang Of Mine, Twilight Time, Downtown Second Line, Oh Peter!, Memphis Blues, Lou-easy-an-i-ay, Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime, Caldonia. (76min)
